Hello Daddy (The Newsroom)

Rick Santorum (Jeff Roberson/AP)

No delegates were at stake on Tuesday night, but Rick Santorum still scored three important--and surprisingly large--victories in the race for the Republican presidential nomination?by winning caucuses in Colorado and Minnesota and a primary in Missouri.

"Conservatism is alive and well in Missouri and Minnesota,"?Santorum said when he took the stage, before the Colorado results had been announced, at his victory party in St. Charles, Mo. He called his wins "a victory for the voices of our party, conservatives and tea party people, who are out there every day in the vineyards."

"I don't stand here to claim to be the conservative alternative to Mitt Romney," Santorum went on to say. "I stand here to be the conservative alternative to Barack Obama."

Romney, who had been discussed as the Republican Party's inevitable nominee after wins in Florida and Nevada last week, had his worst night of the 2012 presidential campaign.

For the first time, there was a contest where Romney did not finish in first or second place.?In Minnesota, Romney fell to third, behind Ron Paul.?With 94 percent of the precincts reporting in Minnesota,?Santorum led with 45 percent of the vote, followed by Paul with 27 percent, Romney with 17 percent and Newt Gingrich with 11 percent.

Romney finished second in Missouri, but with only 25 percent of the vote--30 percentage points behind Santorum's 55 percent landslide.

Voters in eight states have now made their preferences known in the Republican presidential campaign, and Santorum has won four of those contests: Iowa, Colorado, Minnesota, and Missouri. Romney, who still leads in the delegate race, has won three: New Hampshire, Florida and Nevada. Gingrich has won one, South Carolina.

In Colorado,?Santorum scored 40 percent of the vote, followed by Romney with 35 percent, Gingrich with 13 percent and Paul with 12 percent.

In a swipe at Romney's remarks last week about his concern for the middle class over the rich and the poor, Santorum said in his victory speech, "I care about the very rich?and the very poor. I care about 100 percent of America."

It was the?first multi-state election night of the 2012 campaign. Colorado and Minnesota, which held caucuses, selected delegates to attend state conventions in the spring--the same process used in Iowa's first-in-the-nation caucuses.

Missouri, where Newt Gingrich was not able to secure a spot on the ballot, was an entirely different story, and a messier one. By state law, Missouri must hold its primary on a particular date in February. But this year, the national Republican Party mandated that--with the exception of four states that were allowed to vote in February--all others must hold their election in March or later. The Missouri legislature was not able to pass a law changing the primary date, so the state held the election anyway. But the primary is non-binding--meaningless in terms of delegate selection.?There will be a Missouri caucus in April to determine who gets the state's delegates to the Republican national convention in August.

Despite the zero delegates that will be awarded, Santorum will glean something from his victories. When Mitt Romney ran for president in 2008, he won in both Colorado and Minnesota; his performance Tuesday is certain to be compared to the results from four years ago.

Yet even with two losses on Tuesday, Romney is having a much better year in 2012 than he had in 2008: It was four years ago Tuesday that Romney dropped his bid for the presidency.

Designers lend their glamour to Obama campaign

(AP) ? Can President Barack Obama's campaign recapture the glamour quotient of four years ago?

Yes it can, says actress Scarlett Johansson ? even if it's one designer tote bag at a time.

Johansson, dressed in a black-and-sheer Stella McCartney frock, lent her own glamour quotient Tuesday to a launch party for Runway to Win, a fundraising initiative from the fashion world. A creation of Vogue editor Anna Wintour, one of the top Obama fundraisers in the country, it brings together 27 designers who've made relatively low-cost items such as canvas tote bags and T-shirts with Obama images and logos, now being sold online, with profits going to the campaign.

Johansson pronounced them "wearable, beautiful pieces."

"To everyone I know with birthdays in between now and November: You're welcome!" she quipped to the crowd, which sipped wine, munched on hors d'oeuvres and, of course, shopped. Also addressing the crowd: Obama campaign manager Jim Messina, who urged guests to "Buy everything you can get your hands on."

Items piled on tables included a T-shirt designed by singer Beyonce and her mother, Tina Knowles, decorated with slogans such as, "I'm in!" (The shirt sells for $45.) A gray long-sleeved T-shirt by Jason Wu, who famously designed Michelle Obama's white inaugural ballgown, had a bird on a branch, in campaign colors (red, white and blue). A Marc Jacobs tee simply said: "I Vote Obama."

And plain old canvas totes gained a lot of cachet merely from the tiny labels on them: Vera Wang, Derek Lam, Tory Burch and many others.

Johansson, chatting with reporters, said it was important for the campaign to "reintroduce that kind of cool factor to the re-election."

She deflected a question about fellow actor Matt Damon, her co-star in the recent movie "We Bought a Zoo," who campaigned for Obama four years ago but has been quite vocal about his disillusionment this time around.

Johansson said the president is "fighting an uphill battle."

"He was always going to be a two-term president," she said. "Change doesn't happen overnight. It takes time."

She said she was even more enthusiastic than last time.

"It's so important that his vision continue," she said. "And the alternative is devastating. It just cannot be."

Wintour, wearing a Thakoon silk scarf ($95), said she thought fashion designers "can be very helpful" this election year ? "As you see here tonight. These designers are going way beyond the call of duty. They should be working on their shows."

Scoping out the merchandise was one high-profile designer who can't vote in the United States ? Frenchman Olivier Theyskens, of Theory, which lent its showroom for the event.

"Designers are like dreamers," Theyskens said. "So it's good for us sometimes to get into politics, into reality, into the real future. I can't vote here, but I can say what I think."

The Obama campaign says the merchandise has been created in full compliance with campaign finance laws.

Johansson had her own comeback to reported Republican concerns that the Runway to Win project might violate campaign finance rules if the items cost a lot more than they're selling for, saying of the GOP: "They're so unfashionable!"

As for her own candidate, she said, he and his wife "have a casual cool about them. They're a very stylish couple."

Johansson sure looked great in her designer duds, but will she be attending shows during Fashion Week, which starts on Thursday?

"No," she said. "Fashion shows can be a little high-maintenance."

Exclusive: China buys up Saudi, Russian oil to squeeze Iran (Reuters)

BEIJING/LONDON (Reuters) ? China is scouring the world for alternative oil supplies to replace a fall in its imports from Iran, as it seeks to negotiate lower prices from Tehran, and has been drawing heavily on Saudi Arabia.

Industry sources told Reuters that Beijing had bought the bulk of an increase in crude oil supplies from top oil exporter Saudi Arabia in the last few months.

The world's second-largest oil consumer is also importing more cargoes from West Africa, Russia and Australia to replace reduced supplies from Iran.

China is the top buyer of Iranian oil, taking around 20 percent of its total exports, but since January it has cut purchases by around 285,000 barrels per day (bpd), or just over half of the total daily amount it imported in 2011.

Saudi Arabian output reached 9.76 million barrels per day (bpd) in December, up 360,000 bpd from October, OPEC data show, and has remained near that level in January, according to a Reuters survey. Several sources in the oil industry said China has bought a good part of the extra oil.

"On average, Saudi exports went up by 200,000 barrels per day and this went to the East, overwhelmingly to China," said one of the sources, a senior executive with the trading arm of a U.S. oil company.

A source familiar with the matter, who declined to be identified by name, also said the kingdom had been supplying about an extra 200,000 bpd to China since November.

Oil traders believe Unipec, the trading arm of China's top refiner Sinopec Corp. (0386.HK), has been using a flexibility clause in deals, known as tolerance, to buy more oil under term contracts, especially as Saudi official selling prices in the past two months have been attractive.

"Under the current circumstances, it is necessary to use the tolerance to adjust lifting volumes," a Chinese oil trader said.

Unipec declined to comment.

Official Chinese data also show an increase in crude oil imports from Saudi Arabia in the last few months, but on a smaller scale than the rise given by the industry sources.

China imported 1.12 million bpd of crude from Saudi Arabia in December, customs data show, down from 1.17 million bpd in November. That is still up from October's 1.07 million bpd.

"GAMBLING'

Industry sources were unsure if the trend towards higher supplies from Saudi and others would continue, once China finishes negotiations with Iran over term purchasing contracts.

Some traders suspect China's increased buying of alternatives may be a ploy to bolster its bargaining position in the supply talks with Tehran. Iran is keen to secure customers as new EU sanctions banning its oil, designed to discourage the country's nuclear program, add to U.S. measures.

Officials from the two countries were expected to hold talks as early as this week in Beijing.

"Unipec is gambling now," said a Beijing-based oil trader. "If the Iranian side can compromise and reach a term deal, Unipec will get a large volume of crude at favorable prices, offsetting the premiums it paid to buy alternative oil over the past months."

Those alternatives include Unipec's purchase of five Russian ESPO cargoes, or 3.65 million barrels, for March loading at a premium of around $6.00 a barrel to Dubai quotes, traders said. Unipec also bought a cargo of Russian Urals crude, which will arrive in China around March.

"ESPO are all spot cargoes and are close to China. Buying ESPO is practical and easy to handle," a trader said.

As well as crude, Unipec has bought four shipments of Australian North West Shelf (NWS) condensate and Bayu Undan condensate from the Timor Sea for March to fill in for lower Iranian supplies.

A Reuters survey of oil flows from West Africa on Monday suggested Asia's imports of crude from the region are at a record high.

Even so, China still needs Iranian oil and even Saudi Arabia and the rest of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries do not have the capacity to replace it.

With production believed to be around 9.75 million bpd in January, Saudi Arabia holds about 2.75 million bpd of idle production capacity to meet any sudden shortages - less than Iran's output of 3.5 million bpd. Saudi holds the world's only significant unused capacity.

"Iranian crude is important," said an official at a Chinese state oil firm, who declined to be identified. "It is not very easy to replace all Iranian crude."

NYC protest gets heated when Yemen leader is seen (AP)

NEW YORK ? A protest against embattled Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh outside a luxury hotel in New York got heated Sunday when demonstrators saw him leave the building, with one charging toward him and another throwing a shoe.

"Everybody is living in fear of this guy at home, but here, he's getting good treatment!" said Yemeni immigrant Nasser Almroot, a Brooklyn grocer.

The dozen angry protesters were kept behind police barricades across the street from the Ritz-Carlton hotel, which was teeming with security guards, both inside and on the sidewalk where Saleh passed.

The 69-year-old leader is visiting the United States for medical treatment.

He exited the hotel on Central Park South on Sunday afternoon and waved and smiled sardonically toward the yelling protesters ? even blowing them a kiss. Suddenly, one of them tried to charge across the street but was restrained by police, who wrestled him to the ground.

"He can't help it, the killer is here," Almroot said.

As the man bolted out, a shoe flew in Saleh's direction. Showing the sole of a shoe is an insult in Arab culture, because it is on the lowest part of the body, the foot. To hit someone with a shoe is seen as even worse.

Saleh got into his car and his motorcade left for an unknown destination.

Since he arrived in New York about a week ago, the Yemeni president has kept a low profile.

His presence, however, has been controversial.

On Sunday, the protesters hoisted placards bearing photos of Yemenis badly bloodied and brutally killed during his government's yearlong crackdown on anti-Saleh demonstrations.

He signed a deal in November to transfer power to his vice president in exchange for immunity from prosecution.

An election is scheduled on Feb. 21 to select his successor in a nation mired in poverty and divided among powerful tribes and political factions.

While Saleh has been an anti-terrorism ally of Washington, the United States has not officially welcomed a leader accused of killing hundreds of people during an uprising against his 33-year rule.

Saleh traveled to the United States with permission for a private visit.

In June, he was badly injured in an attack on his presidential palace ? an assassination attempt after which he spent months in Saudi Arabia being treated for massive burns from the explosion that ripped through his palace mosque as he prayed.

A world-renowned burn center is in Manhattan, at the NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center. Hospital officials have not confirmed whether Saleh was a patient there.
