The top gaming technologies of 2011 | VentureBeat

Each year brings a host of new technologies to the table that make the gaming landscape seem significantly different from what came before, and 2011 was no different. Here are some of the most important technological advancements the game industry saw in the past 12 months.

Nintendo 3DS

After Nintendo?s press conference just before E3 2010, it seemed all anybody in the game industry could talk about was the ?wow factor? of Nintendo?s newest portable system and how its stereoscopic 3D effect actually worked as advertised, without 3D glasses. Once the system came out, of course, many encountered frustration with the lowered frame rate and reduced brightness in 3D mode, as well as problems with limited viewing angles and headaches after long-term viewing. A healthy minority of players now use the system with the 3D effects turned off, and the lack of a real third dimension doesn?t hurt the gameplay experience as much as Nintendo said it might.

Still, despite all its problems, the 3DS earns a place on this list for being a proof of concept showing stereoscopic 3D doesn?t need bulky head-mounted hardware to work. If future hardware makers expand on the concept with technologies that provide a more robust 3D from multiple viewing angles, we could see a true revolution in gaming.

Sony PlayStation Vita

Though it hasn?t made it to North America or Europe yet, the Vita snuck into Japanese stores in December sporting a regular everything-and-the-kitchen sink approach to portable gaming systems. The influence of the smartphone gaming revolution is apparent in everything from the optional 3G data connection to the large touch-screen to front and rear facing cameras.

But the Vita?s most interesting bit of technology, from a gaming point of view, might be the rear multi-touch panel designed to allow players to control games without their fingers getting in the way of viewing the action. It?s still up in the air whether this innovative new control scheme will become a crucial addition or a forgotten fad, but it shows Sony?s willingness to try something radically different with its PSP follow up.

Apple?s A5 processor

Making its premiere on the iPad 2 in March, Apple?s newest mobile system-on-a-chip processor managed to provide a 400 to 700 percent increase in graphical performance over the year-old original iPad with no increase in retail price. Game developers were at first slow to take advantage of that extra power, but titles like Infinity Blade 2, Real Racing 2 and Dark Meadow have since shown how the additional power can be used to change the idea of what a mobile game can be.

With the chip?s inclusion on Apple?s new iPhone 4S, we can expect more game developers to start upping the graphical ante in their mobile titles. But the real revolution will come when Apple finally adds the A5 chip to its iPod Touch line, which Apple is actively selling for its gaming capabilities.

HTML5

While HTML5 wasn?t introduced in 2011, this was the year the open standard for building interactive web games and apps really came into its own. Look no further than Adobe, which announced in November it would stop supporting the mobile version of competing interactive standard Flash (which Apple steadfastly refused to support on its devices) in favor of HTML5.

It?s not just Adobe. Zynga released HTML5 versions of three of its biggest games this year in a bid for mobile web browsers, and Disney followed up its major acquisition of Playdom with the purchase of HTML5 game specialists Rocket Pack. Startups from Los Angeles? Gamzee to Korea?s Pangalore managed to attract startup funds for their HTML5 gaming efforts this year as well. While we have yet to see the first major gaming hit to premiere on HTML3, and there are some concerns about the standard?s value as a game development platform, the trend towards the open standard seems like it will only continue into 2012.

OnLive for Tablets

Since its launch last year, OnLive?s streaming game service ? which lets play games that are running on and transmitted from remote servers ? has struggled to find a significant market of users. But the recently launched tablet version of the service may just be the killer app it needs, allowing millions of tablet owners to get truly console-quality games on their relatively underpowered devices.

More than the previous?OnLive services, which relied on a PC, Mac or a proprietary streaming micro-console, the tablet version offers an easy portability that turns the devices into a sort of magic screen that can access a wide library of PC and console games easily wherever there?s a reliable internet connection. Support for external Bluetooth controllers means tablet owners no longer have to suffer through the tactile smoothness of a touchscreen, either: OnLive for tablets open the devices up to the traditional button-based games most players are used to.

Razer Blade Laptop

Razer?s first entry into the dedicated gaming computer market doesn?t include much that?s decidedly new (aside from its built-in LCD panel touchscreen next to the keyboard, perhaps). Still, the combination of internal hardware aimed at high-end gamers and a sleek form factor stakes out an important place in the gaming hardware market. The $2,800 price might limit the laptop?s appeal outside an incredibly hardcore niche, but the Blade stands out for imagining a PC gaming future that isn?t just dominated by free-to-play casual social games.

PlayStation 3D Display

It may look like just another 3D TV, but when combined with the PS3, Sony?s gaming-focused display gains one special feature to set it apart ? a multiplayer mode where each participant gets their own distinct, full screen view. The days of squinting at a stretched-out split-screen view for couch competitions is effectively over with this TV, though the 24? size may cause some squinting of its own for players used to a larger, widescreen living room setup.

The 3D display has already seen heavily reduced prices at some retailers, perhaps showing a lack of market interest in yet another 3D capable monitor. Still, the fact that Sony released a gaming-focused 3D TV in the first place shows the company?s continuing commitment to stereoscopic gaming as a way to set its console apart from those offered by Microsoft and Nintendo.

Nyko Kinect Zoom

One of the coolest bits of video game technology to come to gaming in 2011 doesn?t even require electricity to operate. The Nyko Zoom is nothing more than a set of small lenses that snaps on top of Microsoft?s Kinect depth-sensing camera, effectively shortening and widening the useful range for the device, removing one of the key barriers to using it in a cramped space. Suddenly, even the smallest of studio apartments can serve as a controller-free environment.

How important is this reduced range to the usefulness of the Kinect? Well, when Microsoft announced it would be releasing a new Kinect aimed specifically at PC users, it made sure to include technology that would let the unit work from as close as 40 centimeters away. In other words, Nyko was able to see the market for a closer range Kinect before Microsoft did.

Gingrich fails to qualify for Va. primary ballot (AP)

WASHINGTON ? Republican presidential hopeful Newt Gingrich failed to qualify for Virginia's Super Tuesday primary ballot, the latest setback for a candidate whose standing in polls has been slipping. Gingrich's campaign said he would pursue an aggressive write-in campaign, though state law prohibits write-ins on primary ballots.

The state party said early Saturday that Gingrich and Texas Gov. Rick Perry had failed to submit the required 10,000 signatures to appear on the March 6 ballot.

Failing to get on the ballot in Virginia, where Gingrich lives, underscores the difficulty first-time national candidates have in preparing for the long haul of a presidential campaign.

And it illustrates the advantage held by Mitt Romney, the former Massachusetts governor, who has essentially been running for president for five years. Romney's team, larger than those of most of his opponents, has paid close attention to filing requirements in each state. He will appear on the Virginia ballot along with Texas Rep. Ron Paul, who also has run a national campaign before.

Ironically, Gingrich had a slight lead over Romney in a Quinnipiac poll of Virginia Republicans released earlier in the week.

The former House speaker surged in popularity in early December and tried to use that momentum to make up for a stalled campaign organization. But his standing in polls has slipped in recent days amid a barrage of negative ads in Iowa, where the Jan. 3 caucuses begin the contest for the Republican presidential nomination.

Three other candidates ? Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann, former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum and former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman ? did not submit signatures before Virginia's deadline of 5 p.m. Thursday.

Gingrich's campaign attacked Virginia's primary system on Saturday, saying that "only a failed system" would disqualify Gingrich and other candidates and vowing to run a write-in campaign.

"Voters deserve the right to vote for any top contender, especially leading candidates," Gingrich campaign director Michael Krull said in a statement. "We will work with the Republican Party of Virginia to pursue an aggressive write-in campaign to make sure that all the voters of Virginia are able to vote for the candidate of their choice."

However, according to state law, "No write-in shall be permitted on ballots in primary elections."

"Virginia code prohibits write-ins in primaries. He can't do it," said Carl Tobias, a law professor at University of Richmond.

Tobias said Gingrich may have had trouble meeting a requirement that he must submit 400 signatures from each of Virginia's 11 congressional districts.

Gingrich's campaign did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Gingrich had been concerned enough to deliver his signatures personally. Rushing Wednesday from New Hampshire, which holds its primary on Jan. 10, he had supporters sign petitions before entering a rally in Arlington, Va.

Virginia GOP spokesman Garren Shipley said in a statement that volunteers spent Friday validating signatures on petitions that Romney, Paul, Perry and Gingrich had submitted. "After verification, RPV has determined that Newt Gingrich did not submit required 10k signatures and has not qualified for the VA primary," the party announced early Saturday on its Twitter feed. Shipley did not respond to telephone calls Saturday seeking comment.

Forty-six delegates will be at stake in Virginia's Super Tuesday primary. That's a small fraction of the 1,144 delegates needed to win the nomination. But they could prove pivotal in a close race, especially for a candidate like Gingrich, who expects to do well in Southern contests.

Gingrich already missed the deadline to appear on the ballot in Missouri's Feb. 7 primary, though he insists it doesn't matter because the state awards delegates based not on the primary but on a Republican caucus held in March.

Meanwhile, Virginia's Democrats said President Barack Obama's re-election campaign gathered enough signatures to get him on the state's primary ballot though he was the only candidate who qualified.

In barely enough time to get out of the app store and into the hearts of retro gamers everywhere, the iMAME emulator on iOS has already been erased from iTunes -- just days since its release. SEATTLE (AP) ? Scuffles broke out and police were brought in to quell unrest that nearly turned into riots across the United States following the release of Nike's new Air Jordan basketball shoes ? a retro model of one of the most popular Air Jordans ever made.

The frenzy over Air Jordans has been dangerous in the past. Some people were mugged or even killed for early versions of the shoe, created by Nike Inc. in 1984.

The Air Jordan has since been a consistent hit with sneaker fans, spawning a subculture of collectors willing to wait hours to buy the latest pair. Some collectors save the shoes for special occasions or never take them out of the box.

The mayhem stretched from Washington state to Georgia Friday and was reminiscent of the violence that broke out 20 years ago in many cities as the shoes became popular targets for thieves. It also had a decidedly Black Friday feel as huge crowds of shoppers overwhelmed stores for a must-have item.

In suburban Seattle, police used pepper spray on about 20 customers who started fighting at the Westfield Southcenter mall. The crowd started gathering at four stores in the mall around midnight and had grown to more than 1,000 people by 4 a.m., when the stores opened, Tukwila Officer Mike Murphy said. He said it started as fighting and pushing among people in line and escalated over the next hour.

Murphy said no injuries were reported, although some people suffered cuts or scrapes from fights. Shoppers also broke two doors, and 18-year-old man was arrested for assault after authorities say he punched an officer.

"He did not get his shoes; he went to jail," Murphy said.

The $180 (?137.86) shoes went on sale Friday in a limited release at stores, and the lines began forming several hours before businesses opened.

As the crowds kept growing through the night, they became more unruly and ended in vandalism, violence and arrests.

A man was stabbed when a brawl broke out between several people waiting in line at a Jersey City, New Jersey, mall to buy the new shoes, authorities said. The 20-year-old man was expected to recover from his injuries.

In Georgia, officers said they had to break a car window to get two toddlers out after a woman went in after the shoes. They said she was taken into custody when she returned to the car.

In California, police say crowds waiting to buy the Air Jordan 11 Retro Concords at the Hilltop Mall were turned away after a gunshot rang out around 7 a.m.

No injuries were reported, but police said a 24-year-old suspect was taken into custody. The gun apparently went off inadvertently, the Contra Costa Times reported.

A new edition has been launched each year, and release dates had to be moved to the weekends at some points to keep kids from skipping school to get a pair.

But the uproar over the shoe had died down in recent years. These latest incidents seem to be part of trend of increasing acts of violence at retailers this holiday shopping season, such as the shopper who pepper-sprayed others at a Wal-Mart in Los Angeles on the day after the Thanksgiving holiday, known as Black Friday and crowds looting a clothing store in New York.

Nike issued a statement in response to the violence that said: "Consumer safety and security is of paramount importance. We encourage anyone wishing to purchase our product to do so in a respectful and safe manner."

Backed by Liverpool squad, Suarez to appeal ban

By ROB HARRIS

updated 5:30 p.m. ET Dec. 21, 2011

LONDON - The lawyer for Luis Suarez announced plans Wednesday to appeal against the striker's eight-game ban for racially insulting Manchester United's Patrice Evra, while his Liverpool teammates publicly backed their teammates in a statement.

Alejandro Balbi, who is Suarez's lawyer and agent, told reporters in Uruguay about the plans to appeal just as the forward was getting ready to play in Liverpool's 0-0 draw at Wigan in the Premier League.

The English Football Association also fined Suarez 40,000 pounds ($62,000), but the Uruguay forward can continue playing until the appeal process reaches its conclusion.

"The sanction has two items, the games suspension and the monetary. It will be a total appeal," Alejandro said.

"The counts of racism that were made against him are not true," Balbi added. "He firmly believes that this harsh sanction can be overturned."

He added that Suarez "is very affected" by the English Football Association's verdict, but is also "calm because of the massive support of the club, the coach, his teammates and his captain."

Before Wednesday's match against Wigan, Liverpool's players and manager Kenny Dalglish appeared at the ground wearing white T-shirts featuring Suarez's picture.

They also released a statement expressing their anger at the FA's punishment, which also saw Suarez fined 40,000 pounds ($62,000).

"Luis Suarez is our teammate and our friend and as a group of players we are shocked and angered that he has been found guilty by the FA," Liverpool's squad said in a joint statement. "We totally support Luis and we want the world to know that. We know he is not racist ... we have lived, trained and played with Luis for almost 12 months and we don't recognize the way he has been portrayed."

The FA, though, accepted Evra's allegation that Suarez had directed a racial insult at him during United's Premier League match at Liverpool on Oct. 15. If the appeal is rejected, the FA could increase the suspension.

"We will continue to support Luis through this difficult period, and as a popular and respected friend of all his teammates, he will not walk alone," the Liverpool squad said, referencing the club's anthem.

Balbi highlighted that the only evidence taken into account by the FA disciplinary panel was "the word of Evra," a fact that Liverpool also underlined Tuesday in defense of the player.

Suarez has also received support from his Uruguay teammates.

"I can't believe it. It's a big error that is being committed," Uruguay captain Diego Lugano said. "It's obvious that England has a problem with racism that they are trying to eradicate ? and that's fine ? but this decision does not have solid arguments. Luis is a victim. I don't understand how a player like Evra can do this.

"We all know the kind of person Luis is and the values he has. We are all very hurt. When one of our teammates is suffering, we all suffer. The only thing left is to support him and be with him."

Another Uruguay teammate, Napoli's Walter Gargano, described the situation as a "barbaric fiasco."

"Now we've got to get behind Luis more than ever," he told Uruguay radio station 1010 AM.

Did Bachmann Just Save Romney?

Romney didn't attack Gingrich. His commercials, surrogates, and comments in the paper are softening Gingrich enough. Plus, at this stage in the race?ith so little time left?it's a time for candidates to offer voters their closing arguments, the main thrust of their candidacies. Romney focused on his business career, his four experiences as a leader, and ?the failures of President Obama.

Ke$ha Wanted 'Sleazy' Remix To Be 'Gangster'

Ke$ha snagged four of the biggest rappers in the game for the latest remix of her Cannibal track "Sleazy." After getting Andre 3000 on a 1.0 remix, Ke$ha and producer Dr. Luke upped the ante for "Sleazy Remix 2.0 Get Sleazier" by adding Lil Wayne, Wiz Khalifa and T.I. to the mix.

"These were all kind of on my wish list of people to work with in the future," she told MTV News on Friday (December 16) about the remix, which was released earlier this week. "Dr. Luke and I had this idea that we wanted to just get them all on one track and make it as gangster of a track as we possibly could. It was kind of a little of a mission, and the fact that we pulled it off just in time for Christmas — I'm stoked about it."

Ke$ha said it was "totally a process" trying to get some of the busiest guys in the music industry to make time for the song.

"When I first got Andre 3000 on it, that was a dream come true ... then it was Lil Wayne. Then it was Wiz Khalifa. And each one of them it was like a victory," she said. Weezy was working in the same studio as the pop star, so she "bum-rushed" him to talk about the remix. "We got to talking, and he asked me what my sign was and we realized we could make some sick music together."

Once T.I. was onboard, Ke$ha knew it was time for them to put it out."Finally it was like, 'OK, that's pretty f---ing gangster ... mission accomplished.' "

And Ke$ha says she couldn't be happier with the finished product. "You can really tell they put their best into their lyrics. I'm really proud of the remix 'cause I feel like everyone is really f---ing going for it," she said. "All of their verses are really incredible."

"The Artist" leads Golden Globe nominees (Reuters)

BEVERLY HILLS (Reuters) ? Silent movie "The Artist" painted a pretty picture at the Golden Globe nominations on Thursday, leading all movies with six nods overall including best film comedy or musical in the race to Hollywood's Oscars.

Following "The Artist" among top nominees for the key film awards were "The Descendants," starring George Clooney as a man struggling to keep his family together, and civil rights movie "The Help" with five nods each, including both in the key category of best film drama.

Joining "Descendants" and "The Help" among the films vying for top drama director Martin Scorsese's 3D "Hugo" and Steven Spielberg's "War Horse," baseball movie "Moneyball" and Clooney's political film "The Ides of March."

"I see great versatility, there is a variety of subjects being brought up in a variety of formats," said Aida Takla-O'Reilly, president of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, which gives out the Golden Globe Awards.

The Golden Globes, which are voted upon by roughly 90 members of the HFPA, are among the most widely watched honors programs leading up to the Oscars in February.

But unlike the Oscars, Golden Globe movie nominations are grouped into two categories -- dramas and musicals or comedies -- where "The Artist" faces competition from director Woody Allen's "Midnight in Paris," cancer comedy "50/50," box office hit "Bridesmaids" and "My Week with Marilyn,' starring Michelle Williams in the role of screen siren Marilyn Monroe.

SILENCE IS GOLDEN

"The Artist," an almost entirely silent movie shot in black-and-white and made in the same way as movies were before the "talkies," has captured the hearts of Hollywood award voters and critics this year with its tale of a silent-era star and his romance with a budding actress.

Along with best film musical or comedy, it earned nods for its star, French actor Jean Dujardin, supporting actress Berenice Bejo, director and writer Michel Hazanavicus and musical score, and the media exposure it will earn from being the top Golden Globes nominee should lure fans to box offices.

"The Descendants" and "The Help," similarly have wowed critics, and both films boosted their chances at Oscars by a strong showing at Thursday's Golden Globe nominees.

Along with best film drama, "Descendants" scored nominations for Clooney as best actor and Alexander Payne for directing and writing, among its honors. "The Help" earned several of its other nominations in acting categories including Viola Davis for best actress in a drama and Octavia Spencer and Jessica Chastain for supporting actress.

Joining Davis in the race for best dramatic actress are perennial favorite Meryl Streep portraying Margaret Thatcher in "The Iron Lady," Glenn Close playing a woman masquerading as a male butler in "Albert Nobbs," newcomer Rooney Mara for "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and Tilda Swinton in dark film, "We Need to Talk About Kevin."

In the race for best dramatic actor, Clooney will square off against Leonardo DiCaprio as FBI boss J. Edgar Hoover in "J. Edgar," Michael Fassbender portraying a sex addict in "Shame," Brad Pitt in "Moneyball" and Ryan Gosling for "The Ides of March."

In another key category, best director, Payne and Hazanavicius take on masters Scorsese ("Hugo") and Allen ("Midnight in Paris,") along with Clooney for political film "The Ides of March."

Foreign language film nominees were Angelina Jolie's Bosnian war movie "In the Land of Blood and Honey," Chinese movie "The Flowers of War," Belgian film "The Kid with a Bike," Iran's "A Separation," and Spanish movie "The Skin I Live In."

The Golden Globe Awards will be given out in a gala ceremony on January 15, hosted by British comedian Ricky Gervais and telecast live on the NBC network.

Last year, Gervais ruffled many of the actors in the audience and members of the HFPA with some sarcastic jokes about the reputation of the awards show, but was invited back to emcee the event again this year.

HFPA president Takla-O'Reilly made light of last year's performance at the nominations on Thursday, calling Gervais a "naughty, naughty schoolboy."
