2012: A (Partial) Year In Review ? The Disney Cruise Line Blog

Why just a partial year in review? Well, that is quite simple?? The site did not really get started until the end of May.? So, for the sake of argument let?s just call it June and call this a even 6 month review with some extras.

January ? April

The year started off with with a one two punch.? The Disney Fantasy floated out of the shipyard building at Meyer Werft in Papenburg, Germany.? Then just a few days later the? Disney Dream celebrated her first anniversary.? In early February, we sailed on a 3-Night Bahamian cruise on the Dream.

The Fantasy soon regained the spotlight when she sailed into New York City at the end of February.? In March, the Fantasy was christened by her godmother Mariah Carey before sailing south to Port Canaveral to begin alternating 7-night Eastern & Western Caribbean cruises.

(AP Photo/Reed Saxon)

(AP) ? Jenni Rivera launched her career hawking cassette recordings of her songs at flea markets, but a powerful voice, soulful singing style and frank discussion of personal troubles powered her to the heights of a male-dominated industry, transforming her into the one of the biggest stars of the genre known as grupero.

Her life was cut short at its peak on Sunday by an airplane crash in northern Mexico that also killed six friends and co-workers.

The 43-year-old mother of five and grandmother of two became a symbol of resilience for millions of fans on both sides of the U.S.-Mexican border. Her fame grew as she branched out into acting, appearing in independent film, reality TV and the televised singing competition "La Voz Mexico."

She had recently filed for divorce from her third husband, was once detained at a Mexico City airport with tens of thousands of dollars in cash, and publicly apologized after her brother assaulted a drunken fan who verbally attacked her in 2011.

"I am the same as the public, as my fans," she told The Associated Press in an interview last March.

Rivera sold more than 15 million copies of her 12 major-label albums and won a string of Latin music awards. Her shows filled both the Staples Center in Los Angeles and Mexico's National Auditorium, a feat few male singers in her industry achieved.

Many of her songs dealt with themes of dignity in the face of heartbreak, and her shows were known for their festive atmosphere and her intimate interactions with her fans. She would fill song requests from fans who had suffered heartbreak and setbacks, and would often pull women and girls onto stage to personally tell them to keep moving forward.

The plane, being flown by two pilots, was taking her and her publicist, Arturo Rivera, her makeup artist, Jacob Yebale, and two friends, one named Mario Macias and another who was only identified as Gerardo, to the central Mexican city of Toluca after a Saturday night concert before thousands in the northern city of Monterrey. All were killed.

After the concert she gave a press conference during which she spoke of her emotional state following her recent move to divorce former Major League Baseball pitcher Esteban Loaiza, who played for teams including the New York Yankees and Los Angeles Dodgers.

Rivera announced in October that she was divorcing Loaiza after two years of marriage.

"I can't get caught up in the negative because that destroys you. Perhaps trying to move away from my problems and focus on the positive is the best I can do. I am a woman like any other and ugly things happen to me like any other woman," she said Saturday night. "The number of times I have fallen down is the number of times I have gotten up."

Rivera's parents migrated from Mexico to California and founded the label that also propelled two of her five brothers, Lupillo and Juan Rivera, to careers as well-known singers of grupero music.

Born on July 2, 1969 in Los Angeles, California, Dolores Janney Rivera Savedra studied business administration and often said with pride that she started her singing career in flea markets in the Los Angeles area, selling cassette tapes to fans.

She formally debuted on the music scene in 1995 with the release of her album "Chacalosa".

That successful album was followed with two other independent albums, one a tribute to slain Mexican-American singer Selena that helped Rivera expand her following. By the end of the 90s, she won a major-label contract, and built a loyal following that knew her as the "Diva de la Banda."

At the end of the 1990s, Rivera was signed by Sony Music and released two more albums, "If You Want to See Me Crying," and "Queen of Queens."

In 2002, she received her first Latin Grammy nomination, for best album in the band music category.

Even more widespread success came when she joined Fonovisa and released her 2005 album titled "Partier, Rebellious and Daring," which positioned her as one of the most renowned grupero singers and songwriters.

She was also nominated for Latin Grammys in 2008 and 2011.

She was also an actress, appearing in the indie film "Filly Brown," which was shown at the Sundance Film Festival, as the incarcerated mother of character Filly Brown.

"Though she'll be remembered as an iconic singer, she was also a powerful actress whose full range of talents the world was just beginning to discover," the directors, producers, cast and crew of "Filly Brown" said in a statement.

Her most recent album, "Joyas Prestadas," or "Borrowed Jewels," won widespread praise and awards and helped cement her status as one of the brightest stars of Mexican-American music.

She was also filming the third season of "I Love Jenni," which followed her as she interacted with her family and toured through Mexico and the United States. She also played a key role in the reality shows: "Jenni Rivera Presents: Chiquis and Raq-C" and her daughter's "Chiquis 'n Control."

In 2009, she was detained at the Mexico City airport when she declared $20,000 in cash but was really carrying $52,167. She was taken into custody. She said it was an innocent mistake and authorities gave her the benefit of the doubt and released her.

In 2011, her brother Juan assaulted a drunken fan at a popular fair in Guanajuato. In the face of heavy criticism among her fans and on social networks, Rivera publicly apologized for the incident during a concert in Mexico City, telling her fans: "Thank you for accepting me as I am, with my virtues and defects."

To the moon? Firm hopes to sell $1.5 billion trips

(AP) ? A team of former NASA executives is launching a private venture to send people to the moon for a price that is definitely out of this world.

For $1.5 billion, the newly formed business is offering countries a two-person trip to the moon, either for research or national prestige. The venture was announced Wednesday.

NASA's last trip to the moon was 40 years ago. The United States was the only country that landed people there, beating the Soviet Union in a space race to the moon that transfixed the world. But once the race ended, there has been only sporadic interest in the moon. President Barack Obama cancelled NASA's planned return to the moon, saying America had already been there.

But the firm has talked to other countries, which are showing interest in going, said former NASA associate administrator Alan Stern, who is president of the new Golden Spike Company. Stern said he's looking at countries like South Africa, South Korea, and Japan.

"It's not about being first. It's about joining the club," Stern said. "We're kind of cleaning up what NASA did in the 1960s. We're going to make a commodity of it in the 2020s."

Stern said he's aiming for a first launch before the end of the decade and then up 15 or 20 launches total.

Dozens of private space companies have started up recently, but few if any will make it ? just like in other fields ? said Harvard astronomer Jonathan McDowell, who tracks launches worldwide.

Many of those companies hope to follow the success of Space X, which has ferried cargo to the International Space Station for NASA. But more than 90 percent of new ventures will fail before anything is built, he said.

"This is unlikely to be the one that will pan out," McDowell said.

Even though many countries ponied up millions of dollars to fly their astronauts about the Russian space station Mir and the American space shuttles in the 1990s, a billion dollar price tag seems a bit steep, he said.

The latest company is full of space veterans; American University space policy professor Howard McCurdy called them "heavy hitters" in the field. The board chairman is Apollo era flight director Gerry Griffin, who once headed the Johnson Space Center. Advisors include space shuttle veterans, Hollywood directors, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, former U.N. Ambassador Bill Richardson and engineer-author Homer Hickam.

Stern says the company will buy existing rockets and capsules, only needing to develop new spacesuits and a lunar lander.

Oregon wolf in California moves to lower ground

PORTLAND, Ore. ? The Oregon-born wolf looking for a mate in the wilds of Northern California has moved to lower ground as winter approaches.

California Department of Fish and Game program manager Karen Kovacs told The Oregonian ( http://bit.ly/XA8mPt) that winter storms lashing the high country south of Lassen Peak have forced deer to lower elevations, and the wolf known as OR-7 has followed.

His satellite tracking collar has shown him in oak-chaparral woodlands east of Red Bluff, Calif.

Kovacs says this is his first foray into that kind of habitat.

The wolf gained celebrity after leaving its home ground in northeastern Oregon and journeying hundreds of miles across Eastern Oregon, down the Cascade Range, to Northern California in search of a mate.

Bantamweight champ Dominick Cruz reinjured his knee, so Renan Barao will face Michael McDonald

UFC bantamweight champion Dominick Cruz has suffered a major setback in his recovery from a torn ACL. He explained on "UFC Tonight" that the cadaver ligament that replaced his torn ligament was not completely healed when he reinjured his knee the day after Thanksgiving. He had surgery less than a week later, and will likely not be able to return to fighting until late 2013.

He was emotional when talking about how he reacted when he found out he would be unable to fight for an even longer time than he thought. His last bout was an Oct. '11 win over current flyweight champion Demetrious Johnson.

"The only way I can explain my emotions is to people out there who don't have to rely on their body for their money and their career is to say is the closest thing is when you've been dumped by the girlfriend you've been with for years and you love her, or something like that. Or if you lose a family member. I felt like I lost a family member."

Though the UFC has not talked about stripping him of the belt, he knows that the bantamweight division must keep moving in order to stay strong.

"It means everything to me to have [the belt], but I'm here to build the 135-lb. division. I have to look at myself as part of the bantamweight business. That being said, the bantamweight division has other fighters in it. It has to keep growing."

The interim belt, put in place to keep the division from being stagnant in Cruz's absence, will keep on keeping on. Interim champ Renan Barao will put his belt on the line against Michael McDonald in 2013. A date and place has not been set for the bout.

Detained software guru McAfee hospitalized in Guatemala

GUATEMALA CITY (Reuters) - Software guru John McAfee, who is fighting deportation to Belize, was rushed to the hospital in Guatemala on Thursday after his lawyer said he suffered two mild heart attacks earlier in the day.

Reporters saw McAfee carried out on a stretcher from an immigration service cottage where he was detained after crossing illegally into Guatemala from neighboring Belize, where police want to question him in connection with his neighbor's murder.

The 67-year-old U.S. software pioneer's hospitalization came after Guatemala denied a request for asylum.

McAfee was posting on his blog www.whoismcafee.com in the morning, the time his lawyer said he suffered the heart attacks.

"I don't think a heart attack prevents one from using one's blog," said the lawyer, Telesforo Guerra.

On Thursday afternoon he was carried out, wrapped in a blanket with his eyes shut, and taken to a police hospital.

Guerra's assistant, Karla Paz, said she found McAfee lying on the ground, unable to move his body or speak.

McAfee was detained by Guatemalan police on Wednesday for illegally sneaking across the border with his 20-year-old girlfriend to escape authorities in Belize. He has said he fears authorities in Belize will kill him if he returns.

Guatemala's foreign minister, Harold Caballeros, said McAfee's request for asylum was rejected.

Constitutional lawyer Gabriel Orellana, a former foreign minister, said the government should have given more weight to the asylum request than his illegal entry into Guatemala.

"We should take into account the fact that McAfee has not been accused of any crime in Belize," he said.

Police in Belize want to quiz McAfee as "a person of interest" in the killing of fellow American Gregory Faull, with whom he had quarreled. But they say he is not a prime suspect in the probe. McAfee says he has been persecuted by Belize's ruling party because he refused to pay it around $2 million.

Belize's prime minister denies this and has described McAfee, who made millions from the Internet anti-virus software that bears his name, as "bonkers." McAfee later lost much of his fortune and turned to a life of semi-reclusion by the beach.

After his arrest, McAfee spent the night in a cottage belonging to the immigration department. He passed much of the night reading his blog and posting his thoughts on a laptop he said was lent to him by the warden.

One person asked him if he felt like committing suicide.

"I enjoy living, and suicide is absurdly redundant," he wrote. "The world, from the very beginning, hurls viruses, accidents, hungry animals, defective DNA ? and uncountable more - in an attempt to kill us. It always succeeds. Suicide is simply aiding and abetting."

McAfee's earlier posts spoke of his relief at arriving in Guatemala, thinking he had found a way out of his troubles.

DRUG PAST

Government spokesman Francisco Cuevas said on Wednesday the eccentric tech entrepreneur, who loves guns and young women and has tribal tattoos covering his shoulders, would be expelled to Belize within hours. However, an immigration department official later said immediate deportation had been ruled out.

The U.S. State Department said it was aware of McAfee's arrest and its embassy was providing "appropriate consular services," but said it could not comment further.

On the Caribbean island of Ambergris Caye, where McAfee has lived in Belize for about four years, residents and neighbors say he is eccentric and at times unstable. He was seen to travel with armed bodyguards, sporting a pistol tucked into his belt.

The predicament of the former Lockheed systems consultant is a far cry from his heyday in the late 1980s, when he started McAfee Associates. McAfee has no relationship now with the company, which was sold to Intel Corp.

McAfee was previously charged in Belize with possession of illegal firearms, and police had raided his property on suspicions that he was running a lab to produce illegal synthetic narcotics. He says he has not taken drugs since 1983.

"(Before then) I took drugs constantly, 24 hours of the day. I took them for years and years. I was the worst drug abuser on the planet," he told Reuters before his arrest. "Then I finally went to Alcoholics Anonymous, and that was the end of it."

The Great Kotaku Gaming Headset Roundup

The Great Kotaku Gaming Headset RoundupForget graphics?for my money, audio is the most vital aspect of a video game. It's the thing that makes me get lost in a game's world, that makes my pulse pound and sucks me in. But in order for a game to sound good, you've got to have the right equipment.

So much video game playing takes place late at night, or while sharing space with other people, and a deafening 7.1 surround-sound setup isn't a viable solution for many people. A good gaming headset can be worth its weight in gold. But which one to buy? I've rounded up seven of the most popular gaming headsets to see how they all stack up.

It used to be that gaming headsets were chintzy, overpriced cash-ins that lacked a fraction of the audio fidelity of comparably priced "real" headsets. Fortunately, that's changing?there has never been a better selection of great gaming headsets than there is right now.

Unfortunately, shopping for a gaming headset is notoriously difficult. What features matter, and which ones don't? How much to pay? Does wireless matter? And on top of all of that, it's very difficult to really test a headset before buying it, so you're usually taking some Internet yahoo's word for it that the headset in question actually sounds good.

Today, I am that Internet yahoo. This is my attempt to cut through the signal-to-noise mess and round up some of the most popular surround-sound gaming headsets on the market today. This list is far from comprehensive?honestly, in the time it took me to test and write up these headsets, several new models have been announced. That said, it gives a pretty good cross-section.

Going in, I had a few requirements:

  • The headset had to offer surround, whether simulated or analog.
  • The headset had to have a built-in microphone that allowed for voice chat.

Other than that, I'd take all comers. On consoles, I ran a number of games, from Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 and Halo Reach on Xbox 360 to Uncharted 2 and Resistance 3 on PS3. On PC, I tested Skyrim, Far Cry 2 and Battlefield: Bad Company 2, as well as a bunch of other games. For my PC tests, I used a SoundBlaster X-Fi Titanium sound card, which allowed me to tweak and adjust the surround sound to optimize it. I used the same settings for each headset so that I could fairly compare them all.

With this many different headsets, this many different features, restrictions, and requirements, it's very difficult to parse them all, even here. At the end of the article, I'll make some broad recommendations, and if you have any questions about the headsets, I'll be reading the comments and will do my best to answer them.

Cross-Platform/Console Headsets

The Great Kotaku Gaming Headset Roundup

Astro A40 Headset And Mixamp

Price: $249.99 for headset and mixamp, $129.99 for Mixamp alone, $209.99 for A40 headset alone

Inputs: Optical, Coaxial, Stereo Analog, 1/8" analog, USB

Chat Works With: Xbox 360 via included cable, PS3 with additionally purchased dongle, PC via USB

Pros: The Astro Mixamp is still the most flexible gaming audio hardware you can get. The headphones are light and comfortable. Astro's audio/chat mixer remains the most elegant chat solution.

Cons: The A40 leaks audio, which means that whatever you're playing will be very audible to anyone else in the room (or apartment) with you. After several years of use, my Mixamp makes a lot of noise when I turn its knobs, which is par for the course with consumer electronics, but still annoying. They're pretty expensive.

Audio Quality: Decent. The A40's are a bit boomy for me, and there's no way to mess with the EQ on the headphones, so you're pretty much stuck with how they sound, especially on consoles. They're not bad, and were a gaming mainstay for me for a long time. That said, they're not great, and I prefer the audio quality of the newer A50's.

Overall Impression: You can read Mike McWhertor's review from 2009 here. My take: The headset is okay, the mixamp is great. If you've already got a good pair of headphones, you would do well to consider just picking up the Astro Mixamp. It's capable of projecting Dolby headphone surround into any regular pair of headphones, and while you won't get voice chat, you can always cobble together a workaround. That said, the A40 is still a fine gaming headset; the big cans provide a large aural space for the headphone surround to work in, and they're nice and comfortable. This is a good option for anyone who wants a lot of versatility in their gaming audio setup.

Astro A50 Wireless

Price: $299.99 for the headset and receiver

Inputs: Optical, 1/8" Analog, USB, Optical passthrough

Chat Works With: Xbox 360 via included cable, PS3 & PC via USB

Comfort: The A50s feel much like the A40s, only they're a tad heavier?that means that after lengthy sessions wearing them, the top of my head started to get a bit sore. It wasn't a deal-breaker, and usually just meant that I should get up and take a break, but they're a tad less comfortable than the A40, though still comfortable.

Pros: The A50's remain the most impressive, best-sounding, best-designed gaming headphones I've used. There's still room for improvement, but Astro's got this thing nailed. They're expensive, but in this rare instance, you get what you pay for.

Cons: It's easy to accidentally switch the headphone/microphone mix when you touch the headset; the switch on the side feels too easy to accidentally press. While optical passthrough is great, it would also be great if the wireless mixamp had an analog output, so you could plug speakers into it, should you so choose. Very expensive.

Audio Quality: Good. The A50's offer the richest, deepest audio of the bunch here, and the closed-backed headset provides the most immersive surround sound. I wouldn't listen to music on them, but I would (and have) happily watched a movie.

Overall Impression: I recently reviewed the A50?it's Astro's most ambitious headset, and it's also their best. It's fully platform agnostic, and works just as well for PC gaming as it does for consoles. It's also tied with the Tritton as the most expensive headset I tested?but the price is borne out in the quality of the product.

Link: Official Site

The Great Kotaku Gaming Headset Roundup

Tritton Warhead Wireless

Price: $299.99 for the headset and receiver

Inputs: Optical, No passthrough, no USB

Chat Works With: Xbox 360 only

Comfort: I initially thought that the Warhead would be uncomfortable, as their angular design looks edge-covered and hard. So I was surprised by how comfortable they are?they're a sturdy set of cans that stay on your head and while they're a bit snug, they didn't feel uncomfortable at all.

Pros: I actually like how the Warhead looks?the plastic design isn't quite as appealing as the A50s, but it's still a nifty looking set of headphones. After an initial setup, the microphone can talk directly to your Xbox 360 with no required cables, which is nice if you only game and talk to people on an Xbox 360.

Cons: The user experience, however, is kind of a chore. Buttons are placed all over the headset, and it was all but impossible for me to put them on or take them off without accidentally pressing the EQ button and changing how the phones sounded. The biggest problem with the warhead, though, is that they can only be used to chat on an Xbox 360. I'm not sure why Mad Catz would pay extra money to Microsoft to license their wireless tech?the difference between this and simply plugging an Astro in to your Xbox controller feels negligible to me; if anything, it's a hassle. And the fact that the microphone won't work with anything but an Xbox 360 feels needlessly restrictive in a headset this expensive.

Audio Quality: Decent. The actual quality of the audio isn't amazing, but the surround sound is well done, and projects a good soundscape. Bass is strong and ringing, and everything is clear and punchy. It can feel a bit too clear at times, but in general the Tritton is a very nice-sounding headset, though more for gaming than movies or music.

Overall Impression: Mike reviewed the Tritton in depth, so you can read his take over there. For my take: The Warhead is a decent headset, but I feel it doesn't live up to its extraordinarily steep price-tag. At $300, I want it all?a headset that can work with any system, hassle-free, that's well designed, sounds great, and will last for a long time. While the Warhead sounds fine and works well enough, its finicky controls and Xbox-only chat leave it short of those expectations.

Turtle Beach Earforce XP400

Price: $219.95

Inputs: Optical, Optical passthrough, 1/8" analog in

Chat Works With: Xbox 360 via included wireless dongle, PS3 & PC via Bluetooth

Comfort: Not bad, not great. The XP400 is a bit pinch-y, and the ear cups don't fit over my ears as comfortably as some higher priced models. That said, I usually stopped minding after a little while, and was content to wear them for extended periods of time.

Pros: The XP400 is a versatile headset, with built-in bluetooth technology that lets you pair to the PS3 and to your PC, and even answer cell phone calls. The headphone surround effect is solid, if not amazing.

Cons: Everything feels a little bit cheap, which is too bad, considering that the headset costs only a bit less than the Astro A40/Mixamp combo. The Turtle Beach mixamp is small and difficult to store properly, and it's difficult to adjust the buttons on the fly without taking the headphones off and re-examining them. The microphone is strange?I'm much more of a fan of the rubber girders that most other sets use, rather than the wired, bendable one Turtle Beach goes with. (Your mileage may vary on that, though.)

Audio Quality: Decent. The general sound quality of the XP400s doesn't quite match the A50 or the Warhead, but they're still a good-sounding set of headphones and fine for gaming. High frequencies rarely felt crushed, and there was a healthy amount of bass.

Overall Impression: The XP400 is a fair headset, though the comparably priced A40/Mixamp is better sounding, more versatile and better designed. The XP series looks like a step in the right direction for Turtle Beach, though, and if you can find them on sale somewhere (which is likely), you could certainly do worse.

PC-Only Headsets

Several of the headsets I've been trying out are for PC gaming only?they use USB to get their audio, and are incompatible with any major gaming consoles. Still, given how many people play games on PC exclusively, I thought I'd test them and share my impressions. I tested the Corsair USB headphones using their own built in audio software, and the Tiamat using the SoundBlaster X-Fi titanium sound card.

The Great Kotaku Gaming Headset Roundup

Razer Tiamat 7.1 Surround

Price: $179.99

Inputs: Analog 7.1 speaker cables only

Chat Works With: PC via USB

Comfort: While I was surprised that the Tiamat's earcups didn't quite go entirely over my ears, they're still a very comfortable set of headphones, and fine to wear for long periods of time. The cables and remote can be a bit of a bother, but it's not that difficult to get your setup working so that you're not tripping over them all the time.

Pros: The biggest pro for the Tiamat is that it's the one headset on this list that features "true" 7.1 audio. That means that there are eight speakers in all?left, right, left-center, right-center, left-rear, right-rear, center, and sub. The result in-game is remarkable, you'll really hear where everything is coming from. In fact, sometimes you'll hear it too much...

Cons: The audio quality (which I'll get to below) just isn't on par with the other headsets on the list, mainly because the Tiamat has crammed so many small speakers into a space usually reserved for one big one. I actually don't like that I'm given the option to tweak every speaker's level, and to go into my computer's EQ to try to get it to sound "right." I wound up constantly doubting that I had things optimized, and eventually just gave up and lived with what I had. Also, I had an issue with hum making its way onto my cables?whether I plugged into my motherboard's integrated 7.1 outputs or my SoundBlaster's, I always had noise on the line. I doubt that everyone will have the same problem, but it's one of the downsides of analog audio cables that something like that can even be an issue.

Audio Quality: Not great. The Tiamat's big downfall is that the many small speakers used to generate the true 7.1 surround sound just can't measure up to the large drivers in the other headphones on this list, particularly the Trittons and the Astros, even after I messed around with the EQ on my PC.

Overall Impression: Mike already reviewed the Tiamat for us, and raved about them. While I find the headset to be fine, and the surround sound to be occasionally amazing, I don't share his enthusiasm for the headset as a whole. It's easy enough to use, but restrictive in where you can use it?only with 7.1 analog outputs, and only while mucking around with the annoying in-line remote control. If you're dying to try out cool new tech and have money to burn, the Tiamats are certainly worth a shot, but there are more flexible and better-sounding headsets in this list that offer headphone surround that's almost as impressive.

The Great Kotaku Gaming Headset Roundup

Corsair Vengeance 2000 Wireless

Price: $149.99

Inputs: USB only

Chat Works With: PC via USB

Comfort: The Vengeance 2000s are a very comfortable set of headphones?something about the snug way they'd hold my ears made me prefer them to all of the other headphones I tried. They're form factor is nice, and they just feel good on your head.

Pros: For a (relatively) inexpensive set of headphones, the 2000s are a solid piece of equipment, and they sound nice. They're hassle-free to set up, hold a charge for a long time, and the wireless works as it should.

Cons: The biggest problem with the 2000s is that they're not dolby certified, and so they require you to use Corsar's own proprietary audio software. As a result, the surround sound is quite? different than the other headphones. It's not necessarily worse, but it feels more confusing and unclear, and as the software starts adding reverb to simulate room-size, it only gets more muddled. At first, I thought it was fine, but the more I played, the more I realized that things just weren't lining up with their position in the same way as on the other, Dolby certified headsets.

Audio Quality: Good. While the surround is a bit dicy, the sound quality of the 2000s is very strong. Bass is robust, highs don't get too crunchy, and everything is clear without causing audio fatigue.

Overall Impression: The Vengeance 2000s are a really good headset that are only a bit tough to recommend because they have weird surround sound. If you're not obsessive about positional audio, you could do a lot worse, but it's an odd oversight in an otherwise fine set of cans. It's particularly weird since the 1500s below do have Dolby certification. Still, the 2000s are a better than decent set of gaming headphones.

The Great Kotaku Gaming Headset Roundup

Corsair Vengeance 1500 Wired

Price: $99.99

Inputs: USB only

Chat Works With: PC via USB

Comfort: The Vengeance 1500s aren't quite as snug and comfortable as the 2000s, but they're still a very comfortable set of headphones. They're good for long gaming sessions and soft on the top of your head.

Pros: The cheapest headphones in this roundup, the 1500s are actually right up there with the big boys in terms of their features, comfort and sound quality. They don't have speakers to match the Astros or the Warhead, but they still sound pretty good would be perfectly sufficient for the average PC gamer. They're a cinch to set up and work mostly without a hitch. A good, affordable all-around PC gaming headset.

Cons: Really just the sound quality thing, described below.

Audio Quality: Decent. As I mentioned, the audio isn't up to the quality of the other headsets on this list, though they don't really sound bad exactly.

Overall Impression: The Vengeance 1500s are in an odd place in this roundup?they're the cheapest of all the headsets here, but while they don't quite match the 2000s overall audio quality, they do have certified Dolby headphone surround, and they're a generally fine set of gaming headphones. They're comfortable and easy to recommend.

Recommendations

As I mentioned at the outset, this roundup is far from comprehensive. There are just too many sets of gaming headphones on the market for one guy to round up, test, and compare them all. So, my recommendation is based only on trying these headsets, and could change as new models hit the market. That said, I think there are some clear winners here.

Which One Is Best?

I think I can safely say now that Astro really does make the best gaming headphones on the market. I use the wireless A50s every time I play video games, and when combined with the SoundBlaster X-Fi's audio enhancements, they generate extremely convincing headphone surround. They're intuitive to use, well designed, comfortable, and sound great. Best of all, they're really easy to use with every gaming platform. The A40s and Mixamp are also a worthy purchase, particularly given that you can get a Mixamp and use it with whatever kind of headphones you like.

The A50s are expensive. But you get what you pay for. And if you're not looking to spend $300 on a gaming headset (and who could blame you!), rather than spend a hundred bucks less on an inferior set of headphones, I really would recommend getting a Mixamp and using it with headphones you've already got.

Honorable Mention

The $99 Corsair Vengeance 1500s were a big surprise. Usually when it comes to audio, money really does matter?more expensive speakers just sound better. So the fact that the cheapest headset in this entire roundup has okay sound quality, offers Dolby headphone surround, and is easy to use and comfortable? well, if you're a PC gamer looking to get a gaming headset without breaking your bank, I really would recommend the Vengeance 1500s.

There will always be more gaming headsets hitting the market, and we'll keep on reviewing them here. If you've got any questions about any of these headsets, please let me know in the comments and I'll do my best to answer.

Volunteering: More than Compensation for Fewer Cash Gifts ...

Corporate volunteering on the riseThe Chronicle of Philanthropy recently issued a special report summarizing last year?s trends in corporate charitable giving. In 2011, total cash donations showed little growth. Instead, companies began to ramp up their product giving and volunteering programs, creating stronger support for communities than a dollar donation might allow on its own.

As a basis for the study, financial information was gathered from 166 companies ranked in Fortune magazine?s list of top revenue-earners in the US. Analysis revealed that cash donations grew only 4 percent in 2011; a disappointing stat in comparison to the 13 percent rise in corporate gifting that took place between 2009 and 2010. Projections for 2012 figures are equally grim.

The reason? Chronicle cites economic uncertainty as the primary culprit. According to Mark Shamley, president of the Association of Corporate Contributions Professionals, ?Companies are taking a conservative approach. There are a lot of? scary things out there like the European debt crisis?? Allocating a significant portion of profits for cash gifts is therefore a financially inefficient option for many companies.

The Giving Must Go On!

Despite economic insecurities, corporate charity is still showing vital signs of life. Businesses have begun to integrate a variety of initiatives into their social responsibility strategies in efforts to compensate for fewer cash donations.

One example is investment in product gifting, which increased at a stunning rate last year. Though Wal-Mart topped the charts with a $342.4 million total cash donation in 2011, Pfizer easily contributed the most among the corporations studied when product giving was included, donating a whopping $3.1 billion to their core causes.

Companies also have pursued closer collaboration with nonprofit organizations to augment community involvement. ?What we?re looking for is the opportunity to partner with nonprofits that are willing to develop something new with us,? says Ezra Garrett, head of PG&E Corporation?s giving foundation. This way, businesses are not only offering financial support to the causes they favor, but also offering time. The volunteer work that goes alongside nonprofit partnerships is highly beneficial for the nonprofit, not to mention the wellbeing of the donating company itself.

How Can Your Company Give Back?

The report gave a few examples of how companies have encouraged volunteerism:

  • General Mills workers around the world spend a week volunteering on office teams.
  • UnitedHealth Group launched a microvolunteering site to let its employees perform quick tasks for charities, like sprucing up their Web sites or crafting press releases.
  • Kraft planted a garden at its corporate headquarters; during harvest season, employees pick fruits and vegetables destined for local soup kitchens.

In the business world it goes without saying that time is money. So what is time spent volunteering? Although community engagement is not always measured in monetary figures, there is certain value in giving altruistically to a good cause. Arguably, greater value than dollars could provide alone.

The Chronicle?s full report can be found here.

Luxury Real Estate Marketing Tip: "Farm to Table Marketing" - Real ...

A key trend in luxury marketing is the concept of ?farm-to-table marketing?. There are important clues here for marketing luxury real estate. It is not just about offering the facts. It is about telling the story that adds color and engages the emotions.

Farm-to-table marketing in the arena of fine dining while traveling and also for local restaurants is based upon the premise that consumers want to know the point of origin from which their food comes. Chez Panisse restaurant in Berkeley (who pioneered this trend decades ago) credits menu items by mentioning the local purveyor. Here is an excerpt from the appetizer section of their menu: ?Cannard Farm rocket (arugula) and chervil salad with buttered radish and onion toasts.?

In applying farm-to-table marketing, your luxury real estate message should include the overall story of the home you are selling. The potential buyer wants the ?back story? which allows them to become enchanted with the property. When they purchase it, it becomes the story they tell their friends and their reasons for buying the home. For instance, if the home is a rammed earth home, a video on the making of this type of home would make an excellent adjunct to the presentation of the listing on your website.

A few years ago a ?rastra block? home was sold in the California wine country. A rastra block is made from recycled Styrofoam. This home had photo voltaic cells and solar panels. The entire house was a story of ?farm-to-table? origins. The property site itself was originally a stone quarry that produced the stone used to build the streets of San Francisco. The home has recycled architectural elements from France, Africa, and Mexico.

By breaking down the property?s story and telling sub-stories of its various elements through ancillary rich media, i.e., photos and video, you can engage more buyers. You also have a surefire way to standout from your competition.

How To Find Venture Funding | Avid Investor Group

How To Find Venture Funding

The venture capital industry exists to help entrepreneurs turn business ideas into actual, functioning businesses. Most business ventures fail, but there is the occasional home run that can pay for many earlier failures. Other business ventures may not turn the initial founders into billionaires, but can turn into steady businesses that create jobs and incomes for employees and the upper management team. Below is an overview of the stages of venture capital funding, and the most likely parties to secure funding to turn a business concept into reality.

SEE: Starting A Small Business: Introduction

Invest in Yourself
In an ideal world, an individual with a business idea would also have the startup capital to see the idea turned into a fully functioning operation. The reality, of course, is that those with a potentially lucrative idea usually must seek outside sources of funds to make the business idea a reality. Frequently though, individuals can fund the initial idea generation, including creating a business plan and the necessary market research it requires. They should also have some early capacity to apply for patents, establish trademarks and start to develop any related protective measures for the idea, and begin to formalize the underlying product or service enterprise. Funding levels can range from hundreds of dollars to several thousand.

SEE: 4 Steps To Creating A Stellar Business Plan

Seek Out Friends and Family
Closer friends, family and colleagues can help an entrepreneur to the next stage of development. This initial outside network is most likely to take a flier on an unproven idea and lend support, whether it?s through volunteering time or providing financial resources, based solely on the individual?s reputation and ambition to develop a business enterprise. This funding level can usually range in the tens of thousands of dollars up to a couple hundred thousand. Go down this path with caution, however, as collaborating with friends and family on a business venture is one of the most common small business mistakes.

Get on the Radar of Professional Investors
The professional level is where entrepreneurs can look to raise some serious capital. This class of investor is going to be much more sophisticated and have access to or control of much larger pools of money. Having a professional on your side will also help you avoid expensive small business mistakes. High on this list might be an angel investor, who might simply be a wealthy individual that might not technically qualify as a professional, but given his or her level of sophistication and success is going to be more savvy than the previous funding sources. The primary professional category is going to include venture capital firms. These can be smaller firms that also help seed smaller startups, but can also run to very large shops that are used to raising millions of dollars for the most compelling ideas.

Reach the Final Exit Strategy
Eventually, a business should achieve a significant level of success and no longer be considered a startup or early-stage firm. At this stage, it is time to look at exit strategies. A typical exit strategy will include an initial public offering or buyout from a rival or large investment group that might be interested in harvesting the business for steady profit generation. This stage is usually meant to bring the initial founding group some liquidity from their earlier investments and sweat equity.

The Bottom Line
Not all business ventures are going to follow the above progression. Some ideas are just too compelling to start on the ground floor and are likely to capture the attention of a large VC firm. Other companies, such as software firms, may not require much initial capital and can be developed via thousands of hours of computer programming and coding. Capital-intensive businesses, such as large equipment or machinery, may take billions of dollars that only the largest incumbent firms can overtake. When it comes to securing venture capital, an entrepreneur has several options based on his or her preferences and available resources.

The right choice depends on the promotion you have in mind. Perennially successful examples of good mobile marketing include the time specific promotion, which lets a company treat its customers like social network contacts. A company collects a list of customers willing to be in its social network by using a mobile keyword based promotion ? at which point it can use the list it has created to develop SMS marketing initiatives that look and feel like networking invitations.
Texting makes it so all you have to account for are words and timing. You text the right words at the right time and you can expect to triple or double your success in dating. I have seen it happen hundreds of times.
Maintain Clarity: People on mobile phones are easily distracted, and often don?t spend much time on any one site. It?s very easy for the user to push a button and forget all about your site if you haven?t made the right impact. So if your site confuses the viewer or has too much content, they?ll most likely leave without taking any action. Designing an effective mobile website design is all about balancing the various elements and getting them right. As we?ve seen in this article, mobile websites require a slightly different and toned-down approach compared to traditional websites.
One significant use of mobile technology is for communication. Text messaging, or short messaging service (SMS) technology, is a way to exchange brief messages of up to 160 characters with other cell phone owners, while picture messaging- sending images from one mobile phone to another- is accomplished through the multimedia messaging service (MMS) technology. E-mail accounts can be accessed via mobile phones through Web e-mail, Microsoft Exchange, BlackBerryMail, and Enterprise servers and more. Mobile Web users can access instant messaging (IM) accounts such as AIM or MSN Messenger on their mobile devices to send and receive instant messages from their buddy lists.
Do you realize what year it is?? That?s right, we?re well into the 21st century here and the rules of romance are changing again.? If you don?t know how to flirt with a girl over text, you?ve got to get savvy to stay in the game.? Below are 4 tips in texting game that you should always remember.
Short Forms Usage: Understand that mobile users will not have the patience to fill out long forms on your website, even if it has to do with texting, so make sure that they do not have to wait long to participate. Although it is true that mobile keyboards are advanced and are very flexible, however, people still cringe at the thought of submitting large amounts of information on a mobile site. You must remember to use only the important fields while creating your mobile form. An example of this would be asking for their contact information, so when doing this only ask for their e-mail address; the rest can be found later. Make it very easy for your site visitors to convert directly into your prospects and customers, all the while respecting them.
With recommendations and ?likes? the name of the game, every company worth its advertising salt is looking to combine SMS marketing with social media and email marketing. So doing allows you to have a relationship with your customer that is very similar to the relationship those customers have with their friends ? benign and fruitful.
In the recent time, the development in smart phone apps has affected the design community to a huge extent. This new development has provided the mobile technology with a new outlook which makes the mobile more than just a communication figure. It?s anticipated that over 350,000 mobile apps have been developed in the past three years and have been downloaded massively 10.9 million times. It?s also estimated that popularity and demand of mobile apps will reach to its peak in 2013. These facts and figures show why businesses are banking more on mobile application development.

It combines texting with the internet and micro-blogging is born. In today?s society, many people interact through email, Facebook, or texting.

3 Reasons Going to the Beach Is Good for Your Health | Care2 ...

It?s summertime, and if you?re anything like me, the warm weather and longer days of sunlight have you yearning to spend some quality time at the beach. But not only is going to the beach loads of fun, it?s also good for your health. And here?s why:

?

You?ll walk barefoot in the sand:

One of the things I love about going to the beach is feeling the warm sand against my feet. Did you know that there are over 200,000 nerve endings on the soles of your feet? And walking barefoot stimulates them much more than walking in shoes. No wonder walking barefoot in the sand feels like a succession of blissful explosions on the bottom of my feet. Not only are you stimulating nerve endings, but when you walk on wet sand, you?re also exfoliating dead skin cells from your heels. And you?re strengthening all the muscles in your feet, muscles which don?t get used as much when you?re wearing shoes. Walking in the sand allows you to make direct, physical contact with the earth. This is important because when we directly connect with the earth, we?re getting a sufficient supply of electrons, which supports our immune system to function at an optimal level.

?

You?ll spend some time in the ocean:

On a hot summer day, there?s nothing like having the cool, ocean water splashing against your skin. Plus, the ocean contains many minerals that help the body heal and detoxify. Among the many minerals found in the sea is iodine. Iodine helps the body fight infection while boosting thyroid function. The sea also contains magnesium, a mineral that has a calming effect on our nerves. Swimming has been known to decrease stress and increase a sense of well-being in most people. Conditions such as psoriasis, arthritis, and depression even show signs of improvement after a nice long swim. Seawater increases elasticity of skin, improving its appearance. It also improves circulation, helping the body to carry blood to all its vital organs.

?

You?ll get some sun:

A controversial issue these days is whether to be out in the sun or stay indoors (unless you?ve saturated your skin with suntan lotion). Some experts say to be wary of skin cancer and other health problems that can occur from overexposure to the sun, while others believe regular exposure to the sun to be of great benefit to one?s health. After all, life on this planet was only able to evolve and flourish because the earth was close enough to reap the benefits of the sun?s radiant energy. If the sun were to vanish or extinguish like a Roman candle, all life on earth would cease to be. Yet at the same time, the sun?s radiation, in excessive amounts, can also be fatal. If the sun were to implode in on itself someday, the explosion would be so huge that it would obliterate our little blue-green world. Personally, I love to be out in the sun and feel my skin absorbing its heat. (The sun is the best source of Vitamin D, better than any supplement you can buy. It decreases depression by increasing serotonin, it boosts your immunity, and it is essential for healthy bones and skin, among many other benefits.) But I?ve also known many people who have health issues and skin disorders that are aggravated by too much exposure to the sun. In my opinion, getting some exposure to the sun is beneficial, but everyone should use good judgement when deciding on how much exposure is right for them.

Exclusive: UBS, State Street discussed asset management merger

NEW YORK (Reuters) - UBS was in talks with State Street Corp about a possible combination of their asset management businesses, but those talks fell through in June, according to two people familiar with the situation.

For UBS, which had $599 billion in assets under management as of June 30, the merger would have provided a capital infusion, said one of the sources, who declined to be named because he is not allowed to speak to the press.

A UBS spokeswoman referred a request for comment to a statement made by UBS Chief Executive Sergio Ernotti during the company's second-quarter earnings call in which he said, "Our strategy builds on the strengths of all our businesses, including our diversified asset management business." The spokeswoman declined to comment on the discussions with State Street.

A State Street spokeswoman declined to comment.

For State Street, UBS' actively managed products would provide a nice complement to its mainly index-based strategies, which include passively managed exchange-traded funds, said the second source, who was also not allowed to speak to the media. State Street has $1.9 trillion in assets under management.

It is unclear why the discussions fell through, although one of the sources said he believed it was because the two companies could not agree on pricing and succession.

Another question mark is whether UBS is still looking to sell its global asset management business, although one of the sources said the bank is being careful about whom it is talking to. "They are not shopping it around everywhere," the source said.

Earlier this year, UBS needed to raise a roughly $16 billion to meet new capital rules.

Pete Seeger: Folk singer continues to connect families with music

Pete Seeger, the American folk singer, talks to TV host Stephen Colbert about two forthcoming albums, inspiring one mother to reminisce on his work and how it continues to unite her family and, she hopes, the American family.

American folk singer Pete Seeger, still going strong at 93 with a new album coming out in September, was on the "The Colbert Report" last night. And I am making it a point to sit the kids down in front of the computer today to experience the moment when generations looked as if they would collide, but instead, merged. Because to "everything there is a season and a time to every purpose under heaven," and it?s time to talk about the music the birds in our family trees sing to our children.

The reference in my opening was to Mr. Seeger?s song, which he recorded in 1962, but was made popular by The Byrds the year I was born, 1965. The line from Ecclesiastes in the Bible was his ? and later my ? anthem about the quest for peace, equality, and civil rights, calling for patience in the face of adversity.
"A time to be born, a time to die / A time to plant, a time to reap / A time to kill, a time to heal / A time to laugh, a time to weep ... A time for love/ a time for hate/A time for peace, I swear it's not too late."

Seeger is promoting his book ?Pete Seeger: In His Own Words,? released last month and is a collection of letters, articles, and lyrics. He talked with Stephen Colbert about two albums to be released on Sept. 25: ?A More Perfect Union,? a record that will feature Bruce Springsteen, Tom Morello, Steve Earle, and Emmylou Harris; and a two-disc set called ?Pete Remembers Woody,? a tribute to Woody Guthrie?s centennial, according to Billboard magazine.?

There are moments frozen in time that we will never forget, those of tragedy, like Sept. 11, and joy, like the birth of a child. There are songs like that, too. Music from our childhood that, when played or sung, bring back not only the moment, but also the freshness, power, and inspiration of youth. Seeger?s songs are among these and perhaps the reason that he is still going strong.

My kids know Seeger?s work from the songs I sang to them while we lived aboard a sailboat when they were young and the wind was fresh. My kids know the songs from the days that I am angry with political decisions. ?Mom?s singing Seeger," they say. "She?s probably going to go protest something"

I know Seeger?s songs from "Sesame Street" and growing up in Manhattan in the mid-1960s, going to school with Mrs. Lee Roth teaching, ?You can be a patriot, support our service men, and still wish they were home." Mrs. Roth brought classmate Shawn?s father, just back from Vietnam, in and he sang with us Seeger?s tune, ?If you love your Uncle Sam, bring 'em home, bring 'em home.?

Then the class sang, "If I had a Hammer," which Mr. Seeger co-wrote with fellow Weaver, Lee Hays, the song about unity, justice, and peace.? "If I had a hammer. If I had a bell, I'd ring it in the morning / I'd ring it in the evening all over this land / I'd ring out danger! / I'd ring out warning! / I'd ring out love between my brothers and my sisters all over this land."

The moment I will never forget is when we sang the song Seeger popularized, but didn?t write, ?We shall Overcome.? Shawn was African American, my first serious crush in first grade, and I can still see his face as he learned the words. None of us knew them at the start of the song, but by the end we would never forget.

I am not suggesting unrealistic, smarmy family sing-alongs, but maybe it?s time to stop humming quietly alone to the iPod and start singing out loud again. There?s a woman in the neighborhood who walks along the busiest intersections, rain or shine, singing out loud to the world. She does it because she says it makes her feel the power of the Lord and herself.

?When music?s in you, sometimes it gets too big to keep to yourself. You got to share,? she told me.

Seeger?s songs have always been those kinds of songs. I hope he gets Mr. Colbert to sing to his children. Let us be united in song, if in no other way and perhaps even in this modern world with all its woes, we shall overcome.
